SOFTWARE is a very long string of binary code- [ a written out series of ones and zeroes that can easily measure many miles long if you were to actually write them all out ] -that rapidly pulses on & off electrical signals thru a central math-processing chip. [capable of handling 3 different types of calculations; integer, floating point, and ....iforgot the other one... ] when this happens, you can make those calculations perform little formulas that, when combined, collectively work together to do some pretty funky things like display THIS text you are reading on your computer screen & allow us to communicate remotely, or absolutely ANYTHING else the programmer can possibly imagine.
without limits.
if the programmer is talented & persistent, he/she can eventually fulfill the reality of their vision from initial concept on thru to that software's installation under the control of the very keyboard you typed your quesion onto this post with. There exist many different languages you can use to write a program. [even drag & drop]
a programmer writes a program[= a piece of software.] in essentially the same way a composer writes out sheet music.
[= a piece of... um,.... music.] the computer that runs that software is the same as [analgous to] the instrument that plays out that sheet music, very much like those old wild-western automatic pianos could play a tune without anybody touching it's keyboard, by running a specially perforated piece of sheet of music thru it that would send it a long series of on&off [binary]signals ...resulting in MUSIC!!! [same thing a tiny music box does]
anyway THAT string of code is software. [it runs on hardware.]

now go hack into a top secret NSA database & redirect electronic pay raises directly into ALL our bank accounts.
