A few years ago, a family member got credit cards and things in my name and didn't pay the bills. So, when I started making a little money. I paid all of the credit cards off. Then, this misunderstanding led to a collection account with a hospital on my credit. Anyway, I have been working hard to rebuild my credit and it seems like everywhere I turn I being denied. My credit score is 679. I have one department store and I have only about 600 dollars on the balance and my limit is 2500. I have been paying this excellant. Do you have any advice for me. Can I get the collection account off, it has been two years.

I don't see how a medical for someone else can end up on your reports, unless you signed something saying that you would be responsible for it at the time of service.

If you agreed to be responsible for the bill, I would suggest clicking on the link I've provided and go to the medical forum and read.

If you did not claim responsiblility for it - it is not yours to take care of and should be disputed as such. And that site will help you in that regard also.

Also, if those accounts that you had paid are still showing on your reports in a negative manner, the credit forum on that site may be helpful in getting those removed.

After you have done some reading and you have questions, feel free to ask any questions you have in the forums.

The site I've linked is a "free" do it yourself credit repair site. There is a vast amount of information on that site, and in the medical forum, that may help you.

Where is this family member that caused you all of this grief now? Do you want them to be held accountable....If so, you would have to prove it. If is is hospital stuff you very well can, espcially if certain things were performed that you never had done. If not, you need to work on your own for sure. It takes years for those smudges to go away. Keep paying on what you have in a timely manner and that will help rebuild. Also, if you have any open accounts that you do not use, close them. Sometimes if the debt is old enough but you are still being harrassed, you can give them a third of what is owed and they will back off, but have some kind of promisory note that after you pay a certain amount you are done with that debt. But then again, if it is a hospital the debt can be high. I would definitley never trust that family member again....inform that person that if they don't help pay you, you can turn them in for fraud (just make sure you can prove it so your demand carried weight. Good luck.

The only things you can get off your credit report are derogatory accounts that are untrue and incorrect. If there is no way to prove this you cannot remove anything from your report.

Collection accounts will stay on your credit for 7 years of last activity. What will happen if you decide not to pay off the collection account and wait 7 years for it to go away. The collections account will report it again and make it active by contacting you again and asking your to promise a payment around the 4th or 6th year so that it is active again and your 7 years start over again. Or if you are currently making payments the 7 years start over again.

Pay off the whole amount and it will all go away.

For more information on derogatory accounts go to www.Jrealestate.blogspot.com and read the article titled "How long will collection or other derogatory information stay on your credit report?". You will find it in the December 2005 issue.

Paying it will not not remove the account but it will improve your debt to available credit ratio. My company can help you to remove your inaccurate derogatory accounts. www.ercredit.com
