First off, most of the people on here are idiots. Top Gun was a movie about the Navy and actually "Top Gun" no longer exists, at least not as it used to...(a new name, a new base).
Secondly, the Navy was great. You will have a sea/shore rotation depending on the rating you choose. As an AO, my sea/shore was 4/3 (I think). After boot camp and "A" school, I went to my first duty station and luckily got shore duty in Nevada. It wasn't always a picnic, but for the most part I enjoyed it. I never did go on a ship, I got off active duty after four years to move to Virginia with my husband (who was also in the Navy). I did stay in the reserves and had a great time being a full time reservist (I worked about 200 days out of the year) and even did a few deployments to the middle east, which were lots of fun (and hard work).
As for the ships...when you are on sea duty, you'll have 6-9 month cruises and work-up periods in between those. You'll just work on the boat while in port...you won't to LIVE on the boat unless you are low rank and single. While you're on cruise, you will stop in ports around the world. It's not as if they keep you locked on the boat for 6 months straight (unless you do something very bad in a port!)
If you choose Navy, I'd suggest a rating like IT that will translate well into civilian life! This website: http://www.spear.navy.mil/profile/profile/jan01/pages/Navy.html has some good information and briefly describes each individual Navy rating.
Good luck and I hope you have a good time in whatever branch you choose:)

Being retired Air Force, I'm a bit biased. I think you will find that the USAF is more like a civilian job than the Navy or other branches. You work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, normally. Biggest difference is that you wear a uniform, receive tremendous technical training, and work with millions of dollars worth of equipment every day. If you decide to turn it into a career, give it twenty years and receive a nice pension. Lots of folks retire when they're 38, 39 and 40 years old. Not too shabby a deal. If you get out after 4 years, you've received an education that would have cost you a fortune. Plus, you get to work on all those neat airplanes. Good luck.

I was in the Navy. My home port was Pearl Harbor Hawaii, on the island of Oahu. It was a 1 hour bus ride from Waikiki. I was stationed there for four years.

My ship was a guided missile cruiser with two huge guns. I worked in the store room, where I could surf the internet virtually non-stop all day.

Our ship went to sea about once every few months for at least a week, and every other year, we went to the Persian Gulf. The trip there lasted a month or two, and we would stay for 5-9 months. In peace times, the ship would pull in to some new port every other week or so along the way, and we would visit there for about 4-6 days. Once in the persian gulf we would pull into a port about once every month, for about 4 days each.

In war times, we would sail straight to the persian gulf without stopping anywhere along the way, and once in the persian gulf we would pull into a port for about two days every third month.

Hawaii gets old fast. The ship gets old even faster, and everyone likes to break your balls over nothing.

Bottom line, it doesn't matter what branch of the military you join. The only important question is Officer or Enlisted. If you want to work like a slave and party like an animal, go Enlisted. If you want to work like a three toed sloth and party like Hugh Heffner, go officer.

AFis NICE. All depends on your job in either service how nice it'll be, but both do a very good job taking care of you. Navy is probably the safest at this point, but pick the job & service that fits you best & know what you're getting into. Personally I wouldn't want to be on a ship too long. I spent a couple weeks on one once & that's about all I think I'd like to ever do.

I was a swab-jockey 1963-67, Brother -in-law air force.. I had one heck of an adventure, saw west Pacific.Philipines,Japan, what is now Taiwan, Hong Kong and sailed across the Equator. 4 hour under-weigh watches every twenty hours..plus about an 8 hour work shift ,movies in or out weather permit. Went through a hurricane -er- typhoon
out from Hong Kong with 60 foot swells, didn't sleep much that night. Food was mostly good, the bunk rooms were dependant upon what part of the ship it was in.(I was on an oiler or floating gas station) Triple bunks 6 to 60 in a compartment...bearable..
brother in law had a single room-mate in his apartment (in Wyoming).always good food (He says) better hours and more liberty..my liberties were depending on when I had duty-watch and in port.I think I loved the adventure, but the tameness of the A.F. does sound easier.

there both pretty lame i suggest navy see the air force are just lazy civis w/ piolt licenses and the navy is probably the fattest, unorganized military group. you might think how do i know this it is bcuz my father was in the marines for 18 yrs., army nationial guard 2 yrs. and the navy 3yrs. so if i were you i would go into the marines if ur not lazy becuz they are the best and the sexiest!!!semper fi devil dog whoraaa!!!!in the navy you actually don't go on a ship alot.

If you plan on no family and children and if you like long periods at sea in tight quarters, the Navy is for you.
The Air Force has nicer facilities and wants people with brains. Their PT won't wear out the body quick like the Army.

You are definitely the only person who can answer that question; try to base your preference on what you believe you can be good at.

I would like to suggest that you speak with Recruiters for both branches of the service. Also, speak with any military personnel where are live who are in the military services you are thinking of enlisting with.

A word of caution, though. If you speak with "first-termers," meaning their first enlistment, they will fill your head with a lot of prejudices that they personally have with being in the military. Most of those "first-termers" enlisted for their own selfish reasons.

Instead, speak with some people who have reenlisted. Obviously, they would give good reasons for their reenlisting for the second, or third time.
