It's not so bad. You can just follow what every one else does.
It's worth a quick read up on the local rules of the road first though.

I had to drive in a few foreign countries. Iran was the worst. It is the women drivers who are the craziest. There are also lots of women taxi drivers, in fact Iranian women are more liberated that you may think! (slightly too liberated on the road though) .Even worse is attempting to cross the road. they think that zebra crossings are there to make the road look pretty. There is no understanding of stopping for pedestrians. people just shut their eyes and walk.
Egypt is another place with crazy drivers. Once I was travelling in a car in the middle lane of a 3 lane carriageway, about 70mph at least. The front bonnet flew open and no-one could see out the front window. The driver kept on driving for a while then swung to the side and closed it casually, remarking that it often does that.

As a uk resident, most foriegn roads are a bit scary, but the worst has to be the roads in the developing world, it is not just the poor standard of driving skills, but the roads are in poor condition and the vehicles can be very bad, even driving without lights at night.
Road safety is absent, I remember the mountain roads in Yemen, long steep drops, with no barriers to stop you going over the edge.
Also everyone has to drive as fast as possible, in the end you get used to it and it can be rather fun, providing you have a car in good condition!
Worst city I drove in was Damascus that was hell on earth, but I am sure there are much worse

It's not scary at all. When you feel scared or intimidated that is when you make mistakes. Just relax and for the first few miles watch what everyone else is doing. Make sure you research the rules and regulations for the country you are going to drive in. Also the road signs may be different to ours. Do your homework before you go. A good source of this imformation is car hire web sites for the particular country. There are numerous of these, check them all out. Stay calm, relaxed and enjoy the experience.

INDIA is where I have... if you wanna feel your fears go to INDIA and drive a stick shift. dude every single time you pass it feel like your are doing a movie stunt. Its not only cars, big *** goods trucks it can be anything in the world...literally...dogs, cats, bulls whatever. one more thing... like we have two lanes here u know a right side and left side and u can be on either side fast or slow... in india people drive in the middle (on the while line) and they try there best to make sure u dont pass by. u gotta honk and honk either until ur honk's life blows out or urs. holy J its crazy. if u r too scared to be a driver try being a passenger and feel even more hair raising, crazy stuff. thats the place where we should all learn how to drive cuz once u drive there, there aint no place in the entire universe that would make u nervous while driving. starting out wit the extremes is better than starting slow.

At first (30years ago)I was terrified the first time I drove in France. I just would not drive on anything but the motorways.
Now I live in Spain and drive on the right(the right side)of the road every day. The answer is to just do it, and do it again and again and like every thing else it will become easier.

I wasn't doing the driving but I remember driving around France was scary because they seem to have this stupid macho thing going where it's a sign of weakness to be passed. I saw people passing going uphill around a curve on a mountain road.

this year on holiday i drove from las vegas to los angeles, then i drove around the beverley hills and hollywood area, and down to santa monica beach then to annaheim disney in california before driving back to LAX. being from england i found it quite scary at first getting used to the opposite side of the road but driving from vegs to LA was a great thrill, awesome scenery, i just loved it.

You bet! I drove in Sri Lanka where the overtakers overtook the overtakers and almost ended up at the undertakers! White line in the road? What white line? Oh yes - not to mention the pedestrians who believe they have right of way on the freeway!

it was a first but you soon get used to it just drive at a steady speed and keep thinking everyone else is an nutter and remember what side of the road you are on
