Prison isn't prison anymore. Why would they want to leave when they have 500 channels on the TV, 3 meals a day that are better then what we give our military and kids in schools and they don't have to do anything all day! that's not prison, it's a vacation!

I would say so. One must be incapable or unwilling to explore freedom if one "wants" to be in prison. This is a very common attitude among long-term prisoners who've been released. They realize they have missed so many years on the outside and don't know how to readjust to the change in times. Many commit new crimes to get re-incarcerated because that is the only life they know how to navigate.

The desire to not be free has to be the worst mental punishment imaginable.

Modern day prisons fail to motivate their subjects to get out in the real world and find the true passion of life. Mainly in part because these prisoners are finding fulfillment in the prison system. All the free education you want, all the free cable you can ask for and if they feel like their being denied any privilege, they just riot and start up with the ol oh I am gonna get rich on my civil rights suit nonsense. Dont misunderstand me, I dont think people need to receive a harsh beating every time they screw up. I just dont think its OK to pamper criminals with luxuries most folks cant even afford in the real world.

I think prison is always a punishment. Even if the person wants to be there, they do not have much freedom. However I also feel if they comitted a crime then they deserve to be there.

Yes, you can be wanting to punish yourself. It is possible to want to do bad things for yourself, for example if you're feeling guilty for something. Lot's of rich people feel guilty and punish themselves in ways they can not explain or understand because they know they don't really deserve the money. They do drugs, get depressed, mess up their relationships, what ever. It doesn't matter where the punishment comes from, the greates damage we usually do to ourselves

It's not just about punishment, it's also about protecting society from them.
That being said, prisoners should be sentenced to hard labor and should not enjoy their stay.

I guess not if a person wants to be there and is confined to where they want to be. So, no, its not punishment in this scenario.
