There is no purpose for the noise it is simply the result of the strong electromagnets being turned on and off during the MRI. MRI's also use radiowaves which are very close to those of FM radios which may create noise. Earplugs are the standard to ease the noise issue with patients and some MRI technicians offer headphones and will often ask the patient to bring a favorite CD to listen to during the process.
