software industry runs mostly on writing programs that
- The common man can use like say the operating system (Windows, Linux etc), or browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox..) or mail applications (Yahoo Mail, GMail..)
- What large scale industries use
The problem with the 1st one is that a good many of them have already been written and no ever knows for sure what will work with the people. Besides, most people today, believe in getting this kind of software for free. So the real money lies in the 2nd kind of software ie, what large industries use.
Since historically, large industries mostly have a manufacturing background (though of late service industry is also catching up), the fate of software industry is actually tied to these industies.
Whenever these industries go into a rut, they do not have enough money for buying more software, the software industry suffers.

As in India it will be stable for atleast 2 decades, because of globaisation, resource pool and our economic growth.
