Room and board is one thing... even basic medical treatment is fine. But it's gotten out of control, at least here in California. Free medical and dental treatment, TV's in the cells, conjugal visits.... what's wrong with this picture? I know it can't be a "walk in the park", but many inmates probably find life in prison better than life on the streets. Prisons are overcrowded but many released inmates keep breaking the law and going back so it can't be all that bad.

Isn't there a way to give inmates minimal services and make it LESS comfortable so they might think twice next time they're about to commit a crime?

In our society we believe that all should have basic rights. Criminals have more access to these not because they have more rights, but because they no longer have access to the outside world. They cannot go out and earn money for things like doctors and dentists. As for visitation, they can lose those rights. To be punished there must first be something to punish with. Since criminals have already lost so much, the system manufactures new ways to punish these people. So they allow visitation and other things in order to reward or punish the criminal. It is simple conditioning. What else would they have to behave for if these things weren't available.
I agree sometimes though that it seems that they "have it made." Most of us cannot go see a dentist when we need one. Why don't we just let them suffer? Unfortunatly this country believes in human treatment of its prisoners. Need a tooth filled? steal a car!
doesn't seem quite fair that they get stuff when there are innocent people starving and dying on the streets.

Unfortunately our prison system is not a system of correction, rather a warehouse facility and/or a school to make better criminals.
I think they do indeed have "minimal services" TV and Playstatrions and the like to help soothe the savage breast, and are used as a reward system for proper behavior.
I'm not sure that anal r a p e is a better life that on the streets, or being shivved in the bathroom. I don;t envy anyone in prison because I feel they are getting better services than me.

Because they are smart enough to learn what they can and can not do. The average person doesn't have a run in with the law so it doesn't benefit him or her to learn the law. Unless they are a lawyer.

if you think its easier living in prison, then rob a bank and live there for 15-25yrs. then report back what you think is better, living in prison or out of prison.
