Please, please don't consider breeding your poodle until you know much more about dogs and breeding. You will be facing a major heartbreak.
Study on line, or at your library.

This is not a period. It is a breeding cycle. If this is disgusting to you. You won't be able to help her when she has the pups. Maybe you should rethink this idea and the expenses. [the pups will need shots and worming] Also the trouble and danger your dog could face. Educate yourself so you will know what is going on. Read about whelping a litter and Heat cycles. She may not be able to have the pups and you will need a vet to save her.
Three or Four weeks don't let your guard down to quickly. My friend has a standard that was bred on day 21 of her cycle to a neutered male. [At this point we had thought heat cycles were 3 weeks long] It maybe 3 weeks from when people normally notice their dog in heat.
If your female is not spayed she normally will come into season about every 6 months so mark your calendar for the next heat cycle a month in advance so you can be watching for swelling.
This is part of the responsibility owning a female dog that is not spayed. She will have to be taken outside if that is where she goes to the bathroom and brought back inside. When she is ready to breed she will even go and find a male dog if she has the opportunity. Don't leave her out at all by herself.
You should get her spayed as soon as you decide not to breed her. It will hopefully prevent her from getting mammary cancer and uterine infections or cancer. You can talk to your vet. about that. Good Luck and don't let your guard down to quickly.
I hope I helped.

She is in heat...keep her away from other male dogs, or you will have a pregnant dog on your hands. She will be in active heat for anywhere from 7 days to 2 weeks. If you don't want to go thru this again, wait until she has been out of heat for at least 2 weeks and have her spayed. (If you have her spayed too soon after a heat cycle, she can bleed to death) If you have a hard time dealing with her heat cycle, how are you going to be able to handle her having puppies? Esp if she needs help, or one of the pups do? You need to think about it first, sounds like you are kinda lost.

Generally around two weeks. It is not disgusting it is normal. You need to keep her confined though - you dont want puppies that dont look like miniature poodles do you. Also if a larger breed were to come into contact with her and she fell pregnant she would have a very difficult birth.

I wouldnt opt for tampons for her though. Best idea is to keep her in an area where she is quiet and plenty of clean bedding. She may be a little bit antzy but just be patient with her.

Yes, it's messy. But, like a women, it's an important cycle to go through. Be patient, they feel somewhat the same as we do during this time. Don't fuss at them, they cannot help it! My dogs are usually in heat for about a month. There are some doggy pads to help from messing up furniture and such! You didn't mention her age. Female dogs who continue with heat cycle after heat cycle, without mating, can more easily develop breast cancer! So, after she has her litter, you may want to have her fixed, for her health sake!

If it's grossing you out then GET HER SPAYED. There are too many homeless animals in the world - don't let your dog contribute to that problem! It's really cheap too, call 1800-248-SPAY
