I am in California...central coast. There are two types of bamboo...running and clumping. Running goes wild and can be invasive. Clumping stays close to original planting and is easy to control. Bambusa is the clumping variety name with several varieties. I have had great luck so far... just planted 10 or so different types. They need to be fertilized with a good lawn fertilizer and well watered for maximum growth. Good luck. It is a beautiful plant...easy to grow most places. Look up bamboo societies in your area for more specific info.

I am in California. Bamboo with spread and take over the universe, if you aren't careful. It is extremely difficult to get rid of. I grow bamboo in small stock tanks: 4 feet long by 2.5 feet high. I just remove the single drain plug from the tank and fill it with organic compost, manure and whatever planting mix is on sale. The tanks are sitting on a concrete slab. Don't bother with any kind of ceramic containers, the bamboo will break it as it grows. If you must put it in the ground, use a clumping type of bamboo, not the kind that sends runners through the ground. Good luck.

My neighbor has, not me. it just took off and grew. He didn't do anything special. We live in southern Okla. It is almost like a mini forest now. The bamboo averages from 2 to 3 inch bases and 20 feet tall. Covers about 20'x25'.

Louisiana, and that stuff will move/crack a drive or sidewalk.
Now if you hate the guy across the back fence and you want it bad, that's where you want to plant it.
Now in a short time, you miss seeing the ladies slim legs in that back yard, better not plant it.

Trust me, cold weather doesn't bother it. I'm in Colorado. It spreads like wildfire here! Be very careful with it!
