I am not a moron, so I would not know about this. But from my own experience I can second your statement. People call the emergency number for far too many things, and many of them are not serious at all and only use up ambulance time and man hours for nothing.

Personally I would call an ambulance whenever I deem it necessary, i.e. when a person is injured, seriously ill, victim of a crime or accident, or incapacitated without obvious reason.

People are often confused about when to call for an ambulance. These are my examples of when NOT to call:

When I'm sleeping :)
When you have a hangnail
When you're date dumped you far away from home and you live a block away from the ER.
When you are lonely and want someone to talk to on the phone, that's what 7-11s are for. lol
When you want to know the number for Dairy Queen
When you've been waiting in the ER lobby for hours and you think you will be seen faster. (Yes it has happened)
When you need a ride to your Dr. Appointment
When you just got discharged from the ER 5 minutes ago.

Do call when it's an emergency.
:)

A true emergency, for example crushing chest pain, stroke like syptoms, an asthma attack that the inhaler is not helping. Then there are things like a car wreck, falling off a ladder from 9 feet and having a broken jaw. You don't call 911 just because you can or you stubbed your toe and you need a ride to the ER (that is why you call a cab).

Well, being an EMT, I have run some pretty crazy and unnecessary calls. I would say that severe difficulty breathing would be it for me. I am scared to death of not being able to breath!! I think that the problem with a lot of people is that they truly have no other way to get to the hospital, no family living close by or anything like that. I think that some people are just hypochondriacs though too.

Living in UK, don't have to worry about medical insurance/costs etc. That said, needs to be a situation where other forms of transport are impossible due to nature of medical emergency. The only time I have ever used one myself was when my appendix was about to burst and the Dr called it so it was not my decision (I wasn't in a fit state to make any decision and could hardly move). Every other time I have been to A&E I have either driven myself or got someone else to.

ONLY if I need to go to the ER and I can't drive myself then I will call an ambulance. Other then that I will go on my own I won't waste their time, when someone else may need An EMT worse then I do.

What kind of question is that? However, in the city of Yakima, people call the ambulance cause their kid cut their finger and needs stitches and they don't have a car to get them to a clinic. Of course, they're on welfare so it doesn't cost them a dime!

I would never call an ambulance...if one comes to pick me up, then I didn't call. I would have to be unconscious.

People call 911 too much for stupid stuff. Plus they have more important things like watching t.v. and "feeding the plants" with expired drugs.

It would take the physical ability of a human being to go and get a phone, press the three numbers of 999, and then o.k, and then actually say the word ambulance.

I'ts not rocket science.
