The cat is mellow, a Van-lookalike. Daughter had 2 hamsters died in the past 4 months. So now she's looking for a pet with a much longer life span.

if the hamsters were dying in a couple of months, i dare say the hammys were sick. Syrian hamsters are prone to getting "wetail", basically diahrea. IT is brought on by stress, everything they eat goes right through them, unfortunatly they are so little they dehydrate easy and it takes only a few days for them to die from it if its left untreated. Birds are awsome pets, and yes they will have a longer lifespan than hamsters, but they also will require differant things. Definatly do your reasearch on them and make sure this is what you both want, because as the adult it will fall into your responsiblility also. Budgies/ parakeets, can easily be hand tame, and as most birds will ... will nip from time to time. Make sure this is something she will not be afraid of, birds use their beaks as we use our hands, but during molting or around sexuall maturity all birds will go through nippy fazes. Also all new bird owners should be aware that birds are very sensitive to fumes, and much like the old storys of miners using canarys to let them know if the mines were safe from fumes , birds can easily die if exposed to the wrong things. Especially in non vented areas or areas that house alot of fumes like a kitchen, birds can suffer respitory failures. Simple things like scented candles, frebreeze, popperi, lysol, glade plug ins, or things like non-stick pans, ovens during cleaning cycle, and cigarette smoke can kill birds. So birdie proofing the house is a must, there are some cool care guides on birds you can look at, at petsmart.com and other places on the internet. good luck

Oh my some of these answers are very silly indeed. The answer if you want to give your child the love of another animal and are ready to take one the care and experience of another pet then yes go for it.

BUDGIES CAN LIVE OVER SEVEN YEARS!!

If taken care of correctly they have been known to hit the 18-20 year mark. This means a well balanced diet of freash fruit and veggies along with seed and pellets. Vet treatment, don't laugh many think a bird is not worthy the hassle to take to the vet. An avian Vet is the best to take them too.

As to the comments of cats I have 12 budgies (parakeets) and a Cat. She will protect them from nieghbours cats. She sit in the sun in front of their outside cage and I found her once asleep right beside of the cage of my latest bird, all of which are still alive! A cat can be trained just like dog to leave things alone. Yes I wouldn't trust a cat in the same room as a free flying bird, but that is common sence.

Head on over to : http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index.php? for more budgie information.

Did the cat eat the hamster? If not then you don't have much of a problem, make sure the parakeet is kept in a different room where the cat isn't allowed. That way the cat doesn't have a chance of eating the parakeet.

NO !!! Cats can't help themselves - it will try to eat the bird or at the very least torment the bird, which will cause it stress. Even the sound of a cat hanging around is enough to kill some birds because of stress. Keeping it out of the room is not enough - it only takes one mistake and the cat will take advantage of it.

Get a dog.

Don't get a parakeet because they don't live longer than 7 years. Plus, the cat might hurt or threaten the bird resulting in emotional distress or even death.

well how old is your daughter? if she is young i dont think that a bird would be a good pet just yet but if she older than like 6 or 7 than it would be fine

birds dont usually like loud or sudden noises but if you trust you daughter than go ahead!
