I use windows xp and the last time I used system restore it did not work, it just zoomed through the process as if the snapshots were missing. Had a virus earlier- IRC-BACKdoor-Trojan, which was cleaned by Norton.

go to safe mode and restore, after a virus hits you it's not able to do it from windows as it should. restart and go to safe mode and there it will restore. make sure you have gotten all the viruses cleaned before you restore or you will spread it even after a restore point. Windows defender Beta will scan your system for all malware and spyware as well as many other nasty viruses.
