--You have very good taste!...My fiance and I just built our very first home and we have a suspended ceiling cloud in our kitchen! Ours is a half circle with stainless steel polls on either side. The half circle theme carries frome the ceiling "cloud" to the breakfast bar, then to the tiles on the floor. It looks great!...We made ours from a wood frame and then drywalled over it. Before the polls were put in, we had a choice between suspending it or using polls. Either way, we love it! We got a lot of inspiration from hgtv.com, the designers portfolio. Good luck!

The suspended ceiling grid-work and tiles are available from any good hardware store/ home center. They should be able to supply not only the main runners, the two and four foot cross sections, and the wall transitions, but the wire and special lags as well. As far as lighting, what type do you want; canned (recessed) or fluorescent? Canned lighting can be a little more difficult because of the placement. Fluorescent lighting is much more energy efficient, and for around $7.00 each, you can have bulbs that will give you the closest thing to daylight spectrum available indoors, providing excellent visibility for pennies on the kilowatt meter.

Use foam. Buy a big block if it, cut it into a cloud form using a knife or even better, an electric knife (used for carving meat) if u have one. Paint it, spray paint it, or airbrush it using whites, creams, and a subtle blue-grey to accent the deeper cuts. Suspend it from your ceiling using hooks that screw in, and a clear nylon line, like a strong fishing line.
PS- GREAT idea! I may steal it!

I would use fiberfill like what they have in cheap pillows. I'm afraid if you use foam it will look like the blob from space waiting to pounce! Have you thought about cleaning this? Make it easy to take down and spray in the tub or something . Have fun! Could you go truely wild and put some flickering mini lights inside for a little heat lightening? Just a thought.

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/UMsPJ
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.

I would try white styrofoam with chunky handfuls of silky poly fiberfil glued to it with elmers or fabritac . the styrofoam is at Lowes or Home Depot and the rest at JoAnns attach to ceiling with eye screws and floral wire.Or cardboard painted white could also work as base.If you can see wires, try fishing line.
