that there was only one god ... then why the need for such a commanment that "you shall worsip no other gods before me" if indeed he is a jealous god then it seems logical that there has to be someone to be jealous of.

I understand your question...it makes a lot of sense. I guess for me "things" can be come gods. Like playing my PS2 or the amount of time I spend looking for World Cup statistics(dork, I know) can become or are gods. These "things" take away from time spend worshipping the one true God. A quote that ties it up for me..."Sometimes the things we call freedom enslave us." onetruth.com

It is true that there is only one God, But people worship many things! For example some people would rather fish than read the bible or shop or look at their car. Also some pray to Satan the devil (the god of this world) , some worship the sun & stars. But their is only one true God who can really help you the way you really need it. Material things were created by God. Satan who also was Lucifer was created by God. So only a fool would worship the things created & not the creator!

Well, people have always looked for other ways to get into heaven without having to follow the bible and GODS way.

They have made up GODS in olden days to worship to, greek culture has more than I can count, even an unknown GOD just in case they missed one.

Modern day GODS are more subtle, but just as devastating to our walk with GOD. Money, power , greed are just a few.

Basically a GOD is whomever or whatever you value over and above your relationship with Jesus Christ. If you blow off church or your bible study time, because it interferes with your tee off time, or your game you want to watch on tv, or if there is a really good sale and you want to be at the store when it opens, etc, you are putting earthly things above GOD and that is truely what this commandment is all about.

NO other GODS before me. Nothing should be more important than GOD.

The jealous part is about GOD loving us, his creation, so much that he cannot bear to see us loving something more than him.

At the time it was written the society was worshiping many gods. Not the Christian God. That's the context you need to know before trying to understand the Bible.

You went to a Christian school for 4 years? You know the Bible inside out?

hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Why would you ask something you know inside out?

witch god? Jehovah is no witch god.

You might consider going back to this Christian school, and consider a Refund.

Your answer lies in getting the real words down. He did not say "worship no other gods", He said "Thou shalt have no other god before Me" .... big difference, don't you think?

In your quote, which is not in any version btw, He's saying there are other other gods, but don't worship them. Using the right quote, He is saying don't make anything a god, I am to be the numero uno in your life.

A god can be anything that you put before God...like an idol of money or something to that effect....God is saying that he wants you to devote yourself fully to him and get the things out of your life that take you away from him.....
then you should get this because it is basic theology

There is only one God. However you can put anything before Him, and make that your god. For instance money career relationships material goods etc.
