Of course it doesn’t make sense. “Love your enemies” is an absurdity. If you love them they can’t be your enemy. What the confused writer was probably trying to say is to love those who view (((you))) as their enemy, and this would make some sense.
And not to mention that the writer’s god is a hypocrite since he sends his enemies to hell.

When I was 8, we moved to a new neighborhood. One of the girls there, about 14, was really mean to me and my family. She would pick on us kids and throw rocks at our windows.
My mother, not finding her parents to be of any help, had us as a family pray for her and her family. She also had us pray to know how we could better the situation. She was inspired to have us bake chocolate chip cookies and take them over to that family. We all went and this gesture of good will and love changed this family from our 'enemy' to good neighbors. While we didn't become great friends, after that the girl was always kind and looked out for me and my younger sibling among the neighbor hood kids.
But even if nothing had come of the cookie idea, just not going down to the level but reaching up to God for help lifted our family. And set a great example for us.
Christ, Himself, had enemies. He STILL has enemies. But he loves them and prays for them.
You may still have enemies, but you will be delivered from them and become more like the savior if you follow him.

Yes you can love your enemy. An enemy is someone who seeks to hurt you. You may not view them as enemies, however they are because they seek to harm you. An enemy is not someone who loves you, but if you are a true christian you are to love this person and pray for them.

4Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 1 Corinthians 13:4-6
In this instance of love your enemies, love is an action not an emotion
You can love you enemy through action

loving someone does not mean they aren't your enemy. just ask a woman who has been abused by her husband. she still loves him, but she knows she can't live with him.
love doesn't just make everything disappear. love does not pretend there is nothing wrong. love simply forgives.

love means to want the best for, not just to like a lot. you don't have to like them to love them. wanting the best for your enemies means wanting them not to be your enemy, which would be best for them.
