I don't know exactly which people you are talking about who are intolerant, and I don't doubt that there are some - even many - in every religion. In fact, I find that to be the case in particular among so-called atheists and agnostics, as evidenced by several of the answers you have received to this question. They seem to have this core belief that all Christians want to force Christianity down their throats, and are intolerant of their choice not to believe in God. But for the most part I don't believe that is the case. The truth is that most believing Christians believe that their faith expresses an absolute truth, and they would be happy to share it with others, but if the others choose not to believe it, they accept that (even if it may sadden them). On the flip side, it generally tends to be the atheists and agnostics who cannot stand to have someone believe that there is an absolute truth and that they possess it. They tend to want to force believing Christians to abandon their idea that there is such an absolute truth, and that what they believe is one of any number of possibilities.
So in the end, who are the intolerant ones?

It's not that some people are intolerant of other people. What I chose or chose not to believe really is not yours or anyone Else's business. And I have enough respect for people not to shove religion or lack of religion down any ones throat. It's not called intolerance. It's called common courtesy.

Because they feel they are right and everyone else is wrong and that everyone should believe what they believe - it's called arrogance and self-righteousness. It's ironic because in most religions that I know of god is the one who is supposed to judge people, not people themselves.
I think fear plays a part too. If there are people out there that don't share their religion - their religion could be "wrong" and they may not go to heaven or where ever when they die. Fear of the unknown is a HUGE thing for religion - it's how they hook you - like a cult playing on your insecurities and fears. It's kinda disgusting if you think about it.

to an extent, it is because we are taught that our religion is the truth. like Jesus said He is the only way to the Father. but Mohammad said Jesus wasn't. so somewhere between the two, someone is wrong.
other than that it depends on what you mean about being tolerant. you mean so intolerant they can't be friends? or so intolerant they can't talk about religion? or so intolerant they actually want to kill each other?

They fear what they do not know, and fear leads to anger and intolerance. All their life, they've be sheltered and hidden from other religions, and only shown their own religion. So they don't understand other beliefs and religions. If people would just look at other religions, then maybe they would realize how alike they are to their own.

C)they don't understand their own religions, because most major religions teach tolerance and love.

Because they are taught that their religion is the one and only right way to God. Anyone else is a sinner.
