I have read that a 3 year-old child should watch no more than 1/2 hour of TV each day....mine loves Dora, Blue's Clues, Sesame Street...so, if you add, that is way more than 1/2 hour, he still play outside, play with his toys, paint, draw, drives us crazy...all the things a typical 3 year-old boy does....I just wanted to know if your children see more TV than they should, and if you think that letting them watch programs like those for more than 1/2 hour, can harm them in some way.

I'm sure I'm driving my children to have to seek therapy when they are adults with how much tv I allow them to watch, I'm in the same boat you are, they love Dora, Blues Clues, etc. And frankly my 5 year old is at the age where she complains every 5 minutes that she's BORED and wants me to come up with things for her to do. Also I have this weird thing about always wanting the tv (or radio) on, to me it's eerie to be in a house with no noise, drives me crazy and I start "hearing" other sounds (like the scratching of the trees on the windows, or the tick of the water heater, sounds that are real, but still freak you out when you're not quite sure what they are), the tv drowns out those noises, I've noticed that even if I'm not interested in what's on tv, and heck I probably couldn't even tell you what's on, but I know it's always on, and well, I've kind of done that with my kids, except I make sure it's on a channel that I know will show appropriate things (my favorite is Noggin because they show no commercials, and they show mostly educational shows). I mean my kids aren't constantly planted in front of the tv, they are off running around the house ("driving us crazy" as you said) doing the things kids do, but I DO know they watch more than the "recommended" half an hour... guess I better call child services on myself I'm such a BAAAD mommy!!! (to all those who honestly THINK I'm a bad mom, they need to meet my children, and see how well behaved they are, see how healthy and active they are, and then tell me I'm a bad mother, right before I bash their head in with the frying pan). Don't worry honey, you're just giving them something to talk about when their older and in therapy for some mental disease or other (because it seems like everybody has SOMETHING wrong with them, wouldn't want your little one to be left out now would you)!

I agree with you. These are learning shows. I would definitely limit the time he spends watching non-educational shows. It's hard to keep a child amused when they are home all day though. I would just suggest that try to keep him active besides watching, if it is just helping clean up. My daughter spends a lot of time watching TV too, I admit, but we do things together, like playing games, and we spend a lot of time at the pool, and even though I have to almost kick her out of the house, she goes outside and rides her bike and does other physical stuff too. I have heart problems and am not as active as I 'd like to be with her; she is an only child with no real kids around to play with her, so I feel guilty and let her watch more TV than I would recommend. I'm bad... sorry

I think it is fine as long as they are doing other activities during the day too. My 2 year old loves Blue's Clues and Jo Jo's Circus so we allow her to watch those shows, no problem. Usually by then we are up and about our day playing outside, coloring or playing with toys.

Mine watchs two episodes od Sesame Street and actually my TV is on almost 24/7 for background noise. I don't see anything wrong with TV unless you sit in front of it ALL DAY. My daughter RARELY actually sits down (even during sesame street), she is usually playing and running around.

That is just stupid. No one watches TV for only 1/2 hour a day.As long as he does other things, and the program is appropriet, a little TV never hurt anybody.
