I've used the mac in the past and remember a view in the folder system that would allow you to move through folders that I really liked. When you a clicked on a folder, it would open that folder's contents in a new pane to the right, and then if you clicked a folder within that new pane, it would create another new pane to the right allowing you to see back several levels of folders. Can anyone help me as to the name of this view in the mac? Hopefully if I know the name, I can find some software on the internet that will produce this same functionality for me on my PC.

This is called 'Column View'. This is a hold over into OS X from the old NeXTStep "Workspace Manager", the specific part is called 'File Viewer'. A File Viewer work-alike was implemented into MacOS 9 in an app called "Greg's Browser"

It has been implemented in X-Windows under the name 'Afterstep' I know of no MS Windows implementation.
