Dry socket needs to be medicated. If it is dry socket the dentist will place drysocket paste on a rolled up guaze in the socket. It does contain some clove oil, but is distinctly different than regular clove oil.

This is a normal but relatively infrequent complication, The extracting dentist is responsible for follow up on your extraction. Contact her.

Two weeks later. It's not a dry socket.

Most likely it is food getting caught in the socket area. Get a turkey baster from the kitchen and douche the socket.

It could also be a canker sore.

Or, it could be a loose piece of bone that either chipped during the extraction and is working its way up or the tissue is folding over the rim of bone that use to surround the tooth and that bone is piercing through the tissue. You can probe around with tweezers (you can't hurt anything this far along) and pull loose bone out or if it's attached...leave it. It will disappear in time.

In the meantime take Ibuprofen as you need when things are bad. But don't over do. Follow directions.

Oh, Yeah. It could be that another tooth is the culprit.

A dry socket is when the blood clot came out of the area in the bone where the tooth was once sitting. Go back to the dentist and he will put some spongy stuff in there to help it. Medication applied to the site.

go back to your dentist. I had a dry socket once and he but this stuff in it that looked like a black tar, it took the pain away immediately and it never hurt after that. If you are worried about the cost give him a call, there should be no charge to recheck it.

Go see the dentist. If it's dry socket, he will pack it with a clove gauze. It gives you HORRIBLE breath, but it will help to take care of that.
