A grey hound.. they're very placid.. calm.. relaxed dogs... and when they retire from racing.. they really need good homes... otherwise they get put down... and that's very sad. check the 'net for the grey hound resuce group.. and save a grey hound and get a great pet!

It depends on your age group and family living situation- a smaller dog for an apartment, a larger dog for a bigger house with a yard. If you want something calm, go for a Labrador or other retriever. If you want something that doesn't shed, go for a poodle or poodle mix. If you want a lap dog, they are all about the same although my stepmom swears by Yorkshire Terrier. They have to be groomed as do most small dogs with hair. If you have small kids, don't get a little dog or a terrier. Get a lab! They love families!

it would depend on exactl;y what size n temperment dog you want if you want a calm(non- yippy) med/big dog then a golden retriever is the way to go, if you like a fun draws attention all the time get a dalmation, i had one and he was a blast smiled at evverybody and i mean he really smiled!!
regarding schnauzers(sp) my cousin had two different ones 2 different times and all she got was torn up trash every day she left the dog at home!! funny she had named the 1st dog 'taz' boy wasnt it funny to say to her dang did you ALREADY know what you were getting into when you named her? lol
we live in the country and have 3 dogs -1 jack russell( very smart n active) - 1german shaepard ( my baby!) shes almost 4, she would protect us with her life if necessary, n one tiny dust mop i got from my friend was runt of litter i call her baby , shes a lil toot but good dog all my dogs love my kids and the kids adore the dogs,
it will also depend on you area of living as far as room for the dog etc.
good luck

I love my Cocker Spaniel. She is sweet and affectionate. She wouldn't hurt a fly and she can be a little bit lazy but if someone knocks on the door or rings the doorbell she barks until she is reassured that it is okay - which I think is great, because it alerts me to the presence of someone on the property. My Cocker Spaniel is also loyal and loving. She's a great "lap dog" but she's okay just hanging out with me and my friends. She is protective of my cat and the two of them get along very well. I really couldn't think of a better dog to have.

Golden Retrievers, I have had a few dogs, well actually many dogs, and my current dog is a Golden, and he is the best dog I ever had. Friendly, lovable, kind, never mean, never growls, or bites, never really does anything, but hang out. He just chills, but can go running or walking with you, and he is a good Way to meet people. Everyone loves a Golden Retriever.

mini snauzer or cocker spaniel. i had a snauzer when i was growing up and he lived to be 16. very smart n intelligent dog in my opinion. had a cocker spaniel is a good breed too,but you have to watch out for females because some get too excited and pee everywhere, lol. weak blatters i think, but snauzers are pretty cool lil dogs especially if you`re lookin for a family pet,and their really good around kids too.

A mutt. Pure breeds have too many health issues. The best would be a retriever/shepherd mix. You would get the gentle attitude and the intelligence and loyalty.

My girlfriend has a Yorkie, and it is the best dog ever. Seriously.
You can dress them up, take them anywhere, and they are so damn smart. Also a great chick magnet, though I must admit they probably all think I'm gay when I walk this little creature with pink bows and a princess t-shirt..

Jack Russel Terrier and English Bulldog Mix ..... We used to have one and she was the cutest dog I'd ever seen. We ended up getting her from my father's old boss. He was gonna either send her to the pound and 'put her down', or send her with a couple of his drunken friends so they could hunt with her. She was seriously adorable, and we really miss her.
I'd definitely prefer another mix like that, if I could find one as nice as her.

One of the smartest dogs I've had was a lab. One of the most fun was a dauchsund. One of the most loyal was a German shepherd. But I think a beagle would be fun if she wouldn't bark a lot.
