15 to 20% If you've done a good job.

If you really ticked me off - I've probably given you some sort of clue during the meal that I'm displeased and you shouldn't be surprised to see a skimpy tip. (I'm pretty easy to get along with though - you really got to do something stupid!)

I don't feel bad about the skimpy tip. I know what waiters make. But that skimpy tip should tell them that either a) I'm going to have to get a lot better if I want to make a living doing this, or b) I'm never going to make money like this - I need a new job!

A good waiter/tress in a good restaurant can make a killing. But they have to work for it.

In a restaurant I leave more than 15% (20% is a good estimate).

In a bar, I don't deal in percentages. I leave 1 or 2 dollars per drink (sometimes 3 or 4)

Why? Well, simply because I know I MAKE MORE MONEY than the waiter.

Having been, or currently being a service industry employee, I tend to leave at least 20%. Much like any profession that deals with the public. if you can scan the room to notice things such as other irate customers and especially children that act up, you can realize its not an easy job. I have been known to tip at the holidays as much as $50.00 for a cup of coffee, just to give them an added boost. A good tip to a waiter/bartender/delivery person insures most of the time good repeat service to the customer. We remember the good in people, we tend to remember the bad more.

If service was good, and I have enough money to do it, I will tip 20%, more or less. If my check was small, I may round up to the next dollar, making the percentage higher. If service was bad, I'll leave less than 15 %. If service was nothing special, but adequate, I leave right at 15%.
