I have birds nesting in my chimney and they are beginning to get very loud! I would like to get rid of them but don't want to hurt them by using chemicals or starting a fire. Any suggestions?

One way to rid your chimney of birds or any other animal humanely, is to go to the local feed and seed store and purchase a bottle of fox or coyote urine (seriously). Open the flu and carefully sprinkle a few drops on the upper side of the flu (don't get any on you) and then close it. This is how predators mark their territory. The natural prey, i.e. the birds will flee, as will mice, rats, possums, raccoons, etc. Works great for keeping pests out of your attic, as well. Cheaper than exterminators and leaves no corpses which cause fly and ant infestations.

Yuck, that's gross you poor thing! I would never have THOUGHT about lice. Complain to the super or apt manager, they really should take care of it, but we know how that works, right!?! Ok, here you go. Technically pigeons are nuisance birds. I wouldnt want to hurt them either, but lice is pretty nasty, expensive if you have to keep dousing yourself and your apt, etc. So if you can poke the nests with a long something==broomstick is great, just let them fall. the birds will fly away once you start poking, and if babies are in there, well you either live with it til they fly (a few weeks or so) or let them go to the Great Reward. Then you'll need to de-louse that area--try the pet store, they'll have something by flea treatments, etc. THEN you need to make sure they cant come back. Make a "pigeon baffle"--only you can know what shape it needs to be, but basically it's going to be something you can fasten to wherever, and make it so there's no flat surface for them to nest on. My neighbor used a roll of chicken wire and bent it all up to fit (around his chimney). Good luck. I'd still call the super, you have the right to live LICE FREE!

We had to call someone in to take the birds out safely. They pushed them down some how. It was a bit messy. Be sure that you have a screen placed on the top of your chimney after they are removed.

If you call up your local pest control, they will be able to take the bird nest away without hurting them and take them somewhere where they'll be safe... but be careful, mothers are very protective over their young and could fly off and never come back to them.

Here in California they have fake owls that you put up and no other birds will nest. Also moth balls. The birds won't eat them but don't like the smell so they stay away.

The only solution if you don't want to kill them is to wait until they leave then put a cap on your your chimney with a screen.

They will fly out when big enough. Then put a screen cap over it to keep them out next year.
