I think a dysfunctional family is one in which the bad times out number the good times. Every family has its own level of dysfunction and there is no such thing as the perfect family... in terms of conflict, secrets, problems etc.... But a dysfuntional one is unable to come together and embrace the obstacles that life brings on as a unit and produce healthy happy individuals that are able to contribute so society in a positive way.
The wikipedia definition is as follows:
A dysfunctional family is a family in which conflict, misbehaviour and even abuse on the part of individual members of the family occur continually, leading other members to accommodate such actions. Children sometimes grow up in such families with the understanding that such an arrangement is normal.
Dysfunctional family members have common symptoms and behavior patterns as a result of their common experiences within the family structure. This tends to reinforce the dysfunctional behavior, either through enabling or perpetuation. The family unit can be affected by a variety of factors.

A dysfunctional family is one where one member is not concerned about the welfare and well-being abt the other member. In such type of families, love is not there and abuse predominates.
Problems in a family cannot make a family dysfunctional. Problems come and go. It depends on how you tackle it. If you have a problem at hand and you don't concentrate on solving it but start hitting and abusing each other vocally or physically- it would really demoralise the family members making the family dysfunctional.
Thanks to the Lord- I am lucky to have a normal family and I thank Him each moment for the care and love I get from my family members.

well, I think that any family that have a majority that is just plan strange in any way is dysfunctional.
I have a great aunt that makes sure that everything is a "secret" from everyone else, but yet is the one to tell everyone everything, and a grandma that (has now past last may) is blind but all my life says "oh, yeah, I see that" when shes asked to feel things, and all the family keeps the "blind" thing hidden from outsiders. three aunts (moms sisters), one that is a drinker but no one says anything to her about it and just keeps her "out of the loop" another that has been the trouble maker her hole life, she had 2 kids as a teenager gave them up and the family has had it hidden for years. the third, "miss perfect" so she thinks, makes believe to the world that shes got a perfect life but, believe me she did a ton of bad stuff as a teen that only my brother and I know about because we were there and had her threaten us not to tell grandma (her mom), anyways I could go on and on.
In a town not far from me there was a fair called "the dysfunctional family fair" my mom and grandma had gone. they enjoyed it and said that there was alot of families there that were just as messed up. maybe you could look it up if ya wanted.

A dysfunctional family is one that does not function well due to life circumstances, finances, alcohol, drugs and/or abusive family members. I grew up in a family like this. Dad was a cold-hearted workaholic who was never around and when he was he was miserable. Mom suffered an eating disorder and panic attacks and stopped cleaning the house resulting in a filthy house that was cluttered with junk. One brother was crack head. Other brother alcoholic who liked to start fires. Me - I just got pregnant and got the hell out.

A dysfunctional family, like mine, when a very close family member dies and they don't call to tell you. You find out this family member died from a phone call from a friend because they read it in the paper. Then you find out from the obituary that they died four days earlier and you missed the wake and funeral because a certain family member puts the obituary in the paper after the funeral is over so no one would have the opportunity to mourn this persons death because this family member is bitter.
This just happened to me and my family.

My family all know we love eachother- but dinner together on the table?- Never! No one really talks to eachother- The only time we really spend time together is around special occassions. But- dysfunctional wouldn't even do that. They would hate one another. sad.
