Just bring stuff that you can layer. T Shirts - Long sleeve Shirts - Pull over sweater and then a coat. The weather here can go from pretty mild to really awful that time of year. Just can't tell. Also, if you are walking outside and go inside to shop etc., then you will need something you can take off, or you end up drenched in sweat and be really cold when you go back out in the air. Good footwear is the most important thing. You will walk your legs off visiting NYC. Don't worry about fitting in. In a city of 8 million, just about everybody fits in with somebody else. Frankly, nobody here really cares. The main thing that will set you apart is if you talk to a lot of people on subways etc., or gawk at everything like you just fell off the turnip truck.
Be yourself, and act like you know what you are doing (however, don't be afraid to ask for directions if you need to. Most New Yorkers like to show off the city and are willing to give you a hand).

Nothing to do with apparel. Just don't walk around looking up at the buildings, or looking out of place. Don't stare at people on the subway and don't walk around with an I heart NY T-shirt on. Save that for after you get home. Just walk like you know where your going, even if you don't. People are friendly though and are usually willing to give directions. I love New Yorkers!

New York has a very diverse population... you'll find various styles.
so whatever attire you don up dont really matter... just not flannel... flannel is for construction workers... and constriction workers only...
remember to bundle up. In December, the weather is still pretty mild compare to Jan and Feb, but it can get pretty darn chilly.
Cashmere lined leather gloves and Cashmere scarf is a good idea
