I want to buy a digital camera mostly for taking pics of my daughter. I would like to crop and then blow up pics. I would also like a decent zoom. I am considering the Canon A620, but dont know if I should go for a higher zoom...Does anyone know anything about the Sony DSC-H5? Any feedback or suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks!

I bought the Sony DSC-H1 to get the long zoom with image stabilization. I take a lot of pics of my grandchildren and the 3x zoom on my first digicam just wasn't good enough for dance recitals, karati tournaments, school programs, etc.

Overall, the H1 has been a great choice for me. The 5 megapixel resolution allows me to enlarge to 11x17 easily.

The H5 has 7 mp resolution, so should allow even more crops and enlarging than my H1.

You can look at

http://www.aakatz.com/h1whitepaper/homepage.htm

to get more info about what the Sony is capable of. Mr. Katz is a pro who uses the H1 in his work. Although the paper was written about the H1, the H5 is similar except for more resolution and bigger LCD screen. (I didn't like the H2; the LCD size and clarity was less than the H1)

Kids move around quickly, so you need a fast camera. Ask about the shot-to-shot timing rating of a camera. (H5/H1 are relatively fast.)

No camera is perfect. My H1 makes noisy pics in very low light, and the burst mode (automatic multiple quick shots) is relatively slow. But most digicams are weak in low light, and the bigger screen was more important to me than faster burst mode.

Other similar cameras are the Canon S3 IS, and the Panasonic FZ30. And last years' models (Sony H1, Canon S2 IS, Panasonic FZ20) are still available for about $100 less).

Another thing: Don't buy a camera based just on specifications and reviews/comments. Go to a camera store and see how they feel in your hands. You need to be comfortable and enjoy using it. And it has to fit your life style (You cannot carry an H5 around in your pocket, and many people like to do that with digicams.) Don't worry about inconveniencing the camera sales people; they are used to browsers!

Have fun!

I don't much about Digital cameras, cuz I am looking for one too. Try going on Yahoo! Tech and they have professional ratings and the pros and cons of almost each camera up there.

since you're blowing up pictures, what you need is a camera with a big sensor and a high megapixel rating

A620 is a good camera... but i'd recommend the A700.
less megapixels... but a bigger sensor... so pictures comes out nicer, and i got a longer zoom
