for souvieners, you absolutely must go to the aloha flea market, (15 minutes from honolulu) all the stuff you see in the shops in wakiki are there for a third of the price.
Kanahoe (sp?) bay is the cheapest place for hotels, they have bed and breakfast inns there that are only $60 a night compared to the $200+ for an outrigger hotel
I lived there a year, the north shore is beautiful, diamond head is a must see, the USS Arizona memorial is awesome (Aiea). In my opinion the beaches on the east side are the prettiest.
try to fit in a glass bottom boat tour if you can, you will find it as money well spent.
Try to go as much as possible, there is so much there that is beautifel and wonderful.
Enjoy your trip, It will be impossible not to.
Blessings

Rent a nice car (Mustang convertible or Lincoln Towncar only 1-2days right? Might as well splurge. You Might only ned the car for 1 day) Drive to the North Shore, check out the beaches & rainforests, hiking available. Many restraunts along the way some right on the beach, just ask around majority of the people are xtra friendly but 5% of the locals are uneducated & don't like haoles (white man/tourists) be respectful & just walk away. NEVER leave any valubules in car or trunk.H-3 freeway is the best vistas to drive to the other side of the island it is 1of 3 tunnels that go through the mountains it starts by the Aloha Stadium. Pearl Harbor, Arizona Memorial & USS Missouri, the ship the documents were signed by the Japanese & Americans, free tours. In Honolulu ,Tantalus, only 1/2 hr drive straight up from Honolulu is a great view both day & night lights. Nice place for a picnic. You'll only put 100 miles on the car the island isn't that big so if you start early you have lots of time to stop wherever you want. Magnificent sunsets in the West, & you might want to do that to miss the 4-6pm rush hour traffic. am traffic:6-8am

First and foremost, the USS Arizona Memorial (Pearl Harbor) is a must-see and is very eye-opening. It really makes you think about the day of the attack (Dec. 7, 1941) and what happened there. While you're at Pearl Harbor, you can also get a tour of the USS Bowfin (a submarine) which is very interesting.
Of course, you have to check out Waikiki Beach, even if only for a few minutes. If you have time, you should also explore the shops, etc. along the street(s) closest to Waikiki Beach. When I was there, we came across a spray painting artist who was set up on the sidewalk doing live paintings and selling them for around $30-$50. It was really neat to watch him create the paintings.
