We bought property in the country and are worried about hawks swooping down and getting our chihuahuas as prey. is there anything we can do to deter this? we see them flying overhead. not constantly but they are there. there was a case in a suburb here (not the country) where it was reported that a hawk tried to get a small dog. Any answers??? Thanks

I used to live in the mountains of California, and I had the same problem with hawks. They absolutely WILL take your dogs if given the chance. Some hawks may even be daring enough to swoop when people are present. The safest thing is not to let your dog outside alone. If you have hawks flying around, chances are you have coyotes, too. Coyotes will try to lure your pet out of it's territory by making yipping sounds like a puppy. If you are unable to escort your dogs outside every time, try building a dog run with a top of some kind. This could even be made of chain link fencing material. Just be sure to have a secure top to the enclosure so that nothing can get in from above, and be sure to sink the bottom into the ground so it can't be knocked over. Best of luck, and keep an eye on those precious babies!!!

Can a raptor carry away/eat my pet? The easy answer to this question is no. The largest hawks and owls are the Red-tailed Hawk and the Great Horned Owl. As a rule of thumb, a raptor can only carry up to half of its own body weight. The largest Red-tailed Hawk or Great Horned Owl will weigh a maximum of 5 pounds which means that the most it can carry away is approximately 2.5 pounds. However, this does not mean that a Red-tailed Hawk cannot kill larger prey. Typically, Red-tailed Hawks prey upon things that are rabbit-sized or smaller, but they will occasionally kill larger prey and eat it on the ground. Depending on where you live, the more likely culprit of a missing pet is the coyote or other domesticated/wild dogs.
*********But I did find a newspaper story where a large bird killed a 4 pound dog. http://www.postgazette.com/pg/04358/431317.stm

It relies upon on how hungry that is. i became strolling contained in the woods in some unspecified time sooner or later and talked about this hawk gliding via the timber with what looked like slightly squirrel in its talons. That hawk became so quiet that it freaked me out for a 2d. something beyonf some kilos will be a stretch, yet when a drought became occurring and their commonplace prey became no longer in abundance, then i'd not be shocked is it happened. Wasn't there a dogs in primary Park that became attacked by a hawk? the dogs became the dimensions of an enormous ny city rat.

I read about a woman who built her dream home, an earth friendly, solar powered home in New Mexico and the first week she was completely moved in a hawk took her very old cat. She has been unable to feel as happy with her home since. I don't think I would trust these little dogs to be safe either. Aside from keeping them inside, I don't think there's much you can do.

hawks will prey on small dogs, cats, rabbits, and other small mammals. you also need to worry about eagles and owls. while they generally do not attack with humans present, it is always a possibility. best way to protect your pets -- keep them indoors, or outdoors under careful observation.

Yes, hawks could take them as prey. Don't let them out without watching them.
