What is the best way to learn French (in the US)?

alliance française will have classes (in major cities)
Rosetta Stone is very good software
Your local university may offer continuing education classes in French.
Your local high school may have teachers willing to start an adult class if enough people sign up, or have connections to teachers and tutors.
Larger cities have language schools, which will try to find you a teacher in any language you want.
Any language book that has 'for dummies, is easy, in 10 seconds a day etc" is probably lying. I"ve looked at them and they are mostly straight grammar-translation--not the way you want to start a language.
Learning a language is a lot like learning to drive a car. You'd much rather get in and drive than learn how the internal combustion engine works. If you develop an interest or a problem, that's the time to learn how it functions--just like grammar in language. Okay rant off

I wish I knew, too! I've had to teach myself everything I know now, because there aren't any college classes offered for it around here! Everything I learned (which, all in all, is not much, lol) has come from online tutorials, my french-english dictionary, and other websites.
As to answer your question, I would suggest taking a class. Some websites offer comprehensive tutorials you can download, but they usually cost a lot. My next effort is purchasing a FRENCH for Dummies Book. :)

try a beginning french class at your local junior college. its cheap and you can learn a lot.
