My 2.5 year old female short-haired purebred St. Bernard has been shedding a great amount of hair. I have never seen this before in her. I know the seasons are changing in NY, but I am wondering if this is normal, or should I have concern. Thanks for your help. A new cat was welcomed into the home...could it be allergies?

It could just be change of season. She may also need more oil in her diet. Also, try Science Diet dog food. This brand of dog food seems to help with shedding. Good luck!

She should be brushed daily. Shedding is often a sign of poor nutrition. Make sure she is on a high quality food, not what you buy in the supermarket or large pet stores, but in small, private pet stores. Some healthy foods include Merrick, Chicken Soup for the Dogs Soul, Solid Gold, California Natural. Add some omega supplements made for dogs such as Lipiderm which should help also reduce the shedding.

It might be allergies, but I think the seasonal shedding is more likely. My grandparents used to have a Saint Bernard, and I was amazed at how much loose fur I could pull off of him.

I have never seen a short haired Saint Bernard. The breed should have a heavier winter coat and shed it in the summer, so it will not die from heat stroke.

This would be normal for the summer months for your dog to shed alot.
Saints are heavy coated and need to shed out to better cool themselves.
I dought it would be allergies as shedding is not a syptom of them

shedding is very normal in all breeds of dogs. if they don't shed then they can have skin problems. i have a 4 year old labrador and she sheds twice a year. usually she sheds two months before she comes into heat tho, but most dogs will shed there coat twice a year cuz of weather changes. its very normal for hem to "blow" there coats.

I think it's pretty normal. my dog (I have a chi) sheds 24/7, pretty much every day. Some breeds just tend to shed more than other.

From what you described it is quite normal. It may be warmer earlier than usual in your area. It would probably help to brush more often than you would. This will help out around the house and I am sure your dog will appreciate it.

be concerned if you also start seeing different pattern of behavior form what she usually does and especially if you start seeing patches of bald spots that is definitely something a vet should lood at.
