The first response is correct, Marines from the Ist, 2nd and 3rd (Okinawa) Marine divisions made up most of the infantry units in Nam. A few brigades were formed as well. Remember, during the Vietnam era, the US drew from its existing, active units. There was a draft during that time, and people were drafted on an as needed basis.

Today, we draw from citizen soldier units which are not nearly as effective. There training is limited, their espree d corps is also limited as is their desire to even be there. This whole thing about a volunteer army is sheer nonsense. Ninety percent of these folks would have gotten out before 9/11, had they known then what they know today.

Reserve and Guard units were not sent to Vietnam like they are now. Marines sent to Vietnam were career military, volunteers, and draftees from Camp Lejeune or Camp Pendleton mostly, either as part of units or as replacements.

Wrong! The first artillery unit wiped out in Viet Nam was from the Kentucky National Guard.
