We had early problems with it in Vietnam because it wasn't like the M-14 or M-1, 30 caliber, which hardly ever jammed. The .223 Remington is the 5.56 used and the M16 is actually an AR15 with fully automatic capabilities.
Troops are complaining that it takes as many as 9 hits to total incapacitate, depending on where it hits, and there is a huge controversy, as there was when we adopted it over the M14!
The M18 is a great Claymore!

- not too reliable design (fragile made of plastic)
- tends to lock jam because of close fitting parts (means dirt and dust = hazard)
- At the time only had a 20 rnd mag, but that was soon after fixed with a 30 rnd mag
During the Iraq war soldiers complained the M16 is too long and cumbersome in the urban fight.
Several Marines even opted to use the AK-47s that had been captured from Iraqi weapons caches. Others were trading the rifle for pistols to go into buildings to allow mobility in confined spaces.

it's not the M-16 that sucks. The M-16 is a very efficient military weapon. It only sucks when the shooter sucks at using it.

First of all, the jams mostly occur on the M16A1 and the M16A2 variant. But the M16A4s are almost comparable to the Ak-47 and the Ak-74. To me, the only thing suck about the M16's is that they are too light, not as heavy as the Ak-47...the more weight it has to me, the more steady I can hold it.

Fully auto it sucks. Kept clean/ammo clean, very accurate long range surprisingly.
Personally I'd still take the 14, even though almost twice as heavy, it kills and brother that's what you want. Tricked out like some in Iraq now it's a one shot, adios.

i've fired many rounds through an M16 and never once had a jam or missfire...not one. But I have to agree with driver...I always wanted something of a heavier cal. (not necessarily wt.) Didn't like that trajectory wasn't nearly as flat as M14 and although they did the job at close range, wanted something effective a little farther out.

it does not suck if it is kept clean. i would have prefered a heavier round. the ak47 can be abused and still fire. also m16 rounds can be fired through an ak47 but ak47 rounds will not go through an m16. makes you wonder dont it. also the first m16s were made by mattel toy company until the contract was taken over by colt.

the reason why many solders did not like the weapon was that it jammed a lot. was not reliable when it firs came out. improvements have been made. With that in mind you can understand why so many did not like it you are fighting for your life and your weapon may or may not jam and you know this before you ever in counter the enemy.

It does not suck, if cleaned on a regular basis and otherwise maintained properly.
