I don't think there is a simple way of telling your daughter not to look for his approval. If you have a close relationship with your daughter she will understand what you say in any form.

Tell her that it won't really matter...WHAT guy she brings home for her father to meet, that her father will probably NEVER approve of anyone for his daughter, being that no boy will probably ever measure up to his expectations for his little girl...Then tell her, that so long as SHE loves the guy, and he treats her well...and she is happy, that that is all that matters...

Father's can be assholes...and sometimes, it don't matter...they just want to be assholes....but at the same time, the little girl in her, will always want to seek approval from her father...just let her know YOUR there to back her...in any decision she makes with her life. So long as she knows she has THAT..she'll be okay.

There is nothing wrong with your daughter wanting her father's approval, Just because you think her father is an A** doesn't mean that she feels the same way toward her father as you do.

Maybe she respects her father and looks up to him. Whatever her reasons may be, That's her decision not yours.

Maybe she sees a side to her father that you may have overlooked or refused to accept.

Sorry ...but it's the truth!

If she is still a young teen I wouldn't worry about it. she will come into her own as she grows and matures. If she is 19 or older I would have a talk with her father, alone. Men can be pretty dense when it comes to matters of the heart if their daughters are involved. He needs to know how seriously she weighs his opinion. Ask him what kind of man he wants for his daughter. He does want grandchildren doesn't he? When you are with your daughter ask her what qualities she is looking for in a man. Get her to write them down. This will make her think on it more. I've always heard; Our brilliant, handsome children marry immature idiots and have the smartest most beautiful grandchildren in the world.

Tell her to do what she thinks is best, because her father is not going to approve in every man she meets. She may miss out on something wonderful just because "Daddy doesn't like him."

Granted, you two need to keep an eye on who she is dating, but she shouldn't seek for approval.

Why is this a problem? You jealous?
I can think of much worse ways for a girl to pick out a guy. If she respects his opinion so much, than I don't see a problem with her getting his input. It shouldn't be the sole reason for her dating the guy, but it should be a factor.
Would you rather have her wanting to date every jerk out there just to pi** you and your husband off?

Just because you and your daughter's father don't see eye to eye on things, it isn't a good idea to put him down in front of your daughter. It's a good way to loose her respect for you.

If your ex is a good father to your daughter, it is normal for her to want to emulate him. Just like sons often look for a special someone in their lives like their mothers.

You talk to her and say Stop looking for your father approval in every man you meet.
If she doesn't get it show her a mirror and tell her you want a baby like this one in you future?

why shouldn't she? In my opinion, Father's only want what's best for their daughters. Maybe you just don't want her to have a really good man. Dad is right to have her hold out....he obviously thinks she is worth more than you do.

Shouldn't you feel relief that she does that ? 'cause to a stranger like me, it simply means that she adores her dad,she thinks of him as a role model so she would really like for her partner in life to have his dad's qualities. Unless your husband is a bad influence to her, then its a different case but I figure you would included that on your question should that be the case. Oooorrr.....could it be that you are jealous that she seeks for his approval instead of yours ?! If so,it would be wise to admit it.She might turn to you for the next advice.
