Some dope dealers in my old neighborhood used 'em for bodyguards.

I predict that my Pit Bull, Ginger, will continue sleeping on the couch.

Oops, she just woke up and scratched her ear. She's unpredictable. I must put her down.
Seriously, there are no valid studies that show Pit Bulls to be any more aggressive than other dogs. Some can be wary or even afraid of humans and other animals, but that's because humans, in their eyes, are unpredictable and aggressive (see above). Why do dogs think humans make good pets?

All what studies?

I think that you may be caught up in this new breed specific legislation that many communities think will stop dog bites. Hate to inform you of this, any poorly trained & socialized dog will bite.

And there are a BUNCH of studies showing that breed specific laws do not decrease dog bites.

Sorry, I completely disagree with your statements. I have had dogs all my life. I have had or worked with almost every breed of dog that there is. I currently have 8 Pit Bulls and 2 Rottweilers. I don't have any problem controlling my dogs.

I have been bitten by a bunch of little dogs. I have been bitten by 1 large dog, a German Shepard. I have never been bitten by a Pit Bull.

They are extremely intelligent dogs. They are easy to train. They are very loyal dogs.

Out in the world, I see lots & lots of very poor dog owners. Dogs kept in the most horrific conditions. And due to their "tough dog" image many of these poor dogs are Pit Bulls and Rottweilers. Many are sick, abused & scared.

Many people who favor these breeds are criminals themselves. They WANT their dogs to be as nasty as possible and work to make them dangerous. Now, that should be illegal.

Why some people have dogs should be the question, not why they buy dogs.

PS - I am currently working with 2 abused "junk-yard" dogs. 1 is a large male Pit Bull (as of now, unaltered) the other is a Rottweiler that was "trained" to be bad. Both are coming along nicely in their behavior. Both are really sweet dogs.

The American Pit Bull Terrier/ American Staffordshire Terrier (i.e. pit bulls) are not a dog for everyone. The Pit is not unpredictable and aggressiveness is controlled with training, when they have a responsible owner. They require good training, socialization, a great deal of attention and a dedicated owner.

Many people get a Pit for protection (a big mistake) and they do not properly raise or train them. Almost all problems with the Pit comes from irresponsible owners. Almost all owners of all breeds that I have met are irresponsible in pet ownership. They do not train their dogs and you see many of them running loose, or hear their uncontrolled barking at night.

I once lived in a rural area were people allowed many dogs to run free. I raised chickens and the dogs came by at night trying to kill them (they got some). These dogs had formed a pack. As a pack they were dangerous to both humans and animals and attacked without thought. I had to shoot them all and the owners were mad at me even though it was their irresponsible behavior that turned the dogs to killers. There was not one Pit in this group, but there were breeds not normally considered dangerous.

Here is what the pro's say about the Pit.

"What would be the ideal owner for this breed?
The ideal owner of a pit bull is an extremely responsible person committed to the care, training and exercise of their dog. Such an owner should be knowledgeable about the breed (or at least willing to learn), very aware of the dog being aggressive but people loving nature of the breed, and dedicated to protecting not only their dog, but also the breed as a whole from the continuing media hysteria generated by bad press and bad owners.

The ideal owner of a pit bull would never allow their dog to roam the neighborhood, be off leash in a public place or around strange dogs, and would not leave their adult pit bull alone and unsupervised with another dog of any breed, since fights can start between unsupervised dogs [of any breed], especially dogs of the same sex, and such fights can have serious consequences.

This owner would spay/neuter, make sure their dog remains socialized with all types of people, contain their dog securely when not supervised by an adult, obedience train their dog, and insure that their dog is well exercised every day. This owner would NOT be looking for a guard dog, as pit bulls are typically very people friendly and not naturally inclined toward "man work."

This owner would either have no other dogs or an altered dog of opposite sex, since many pit bulls are same sex aggressive and can be placed with a non-dominant dog of opposite sex."

"Media hysteria and bad owners have greatly damaged this breed and every incident involving a pit bull makes it worse for the entire breed and their owners, often prompting breed specific legislation or breed bans.

Potential owners need to be informed of the pit bull's correct temperament, and need to be prepared to deal with the issue of dog aggression. Most pit bulls have a high prey drive and may chase small animals or livestock. This is NOT a breed for everyone! The only way to repair the pit bull's bad reputation is to keep them in the hands of responsible owners."

It's not true that all Pit Bulls are aggresive. It's got to do with how they are raised and trained to be. I have 3. 2 males and a female. The oldest male is a 75lb lap dog. The female is the same weight and loves everyone she meets. The other male is still a puppy but he will be the same way. Don't get me wrong though, because if someone tried to harm me or my children they would have one heck of a time getting past my dogs but then again thats what they are for.

They are NOT unpredictable and they are NOT aggessive. Just because one or two dogs in this breed's history has been bred to kill, doesn't mean that EVERY animal from this breed is aggressive. That is like saying all humans are rapists and killers because Charles Manson was one.

They do make good pets. My pit bull is more intelligent than most people on this website, and he's sincere and would never do anything to hurt me or my family. =)

They have a bad rep. Through no fault of their own. A pit bought through a reputable breeder will make a wonderful dog. It is the ones bred purely for aggression and stamina, and then trained to be able to hold its own in a fight are the ones that make it bad for all the wonderful ones out there. NOT the dogs fault. There is money to be made in a good fighting dog, just like a good fighting rooster. It is kinda a poor mans horse race.

maybe it's the dogs agression or uncertainty that scares intruders so people want that kind of dog. i personally wouldn't get one. less than a week ago a pitbull attcked 2 young girls, the 8 year old girl in the head and the 6 year old girl on the neck, now if im right pitbull have lock-jaw so these girls are lucky to have survived that andthe dog was put down and the owner charged. i have a 6 month old son there is no way i will put him near any animal that was known to be dangerous. but i suppose its a persons personal choice!. also everyone here is saying that it is the way they are trained by owners, in some sense they are right, but are they trying to say that pitbulls are the only dogs to be treated that way by their owner?.if so why are german shepards used as police dogs instead of pitbulls?

Because you are still more likley to be bit by a poodle or jack russel terrier. And pit bulls today are beeing bred as family pets by responsible breeders. And by the way, people are more unpredictable and aggresive than any dog.

I know a lot of people that own Pit Bulls, I believe they have very good personalities... a dog turns out as good as it is taught, a lot of people say pits are bad dogs... no the dog isn't bad the person who trained it is!

I don't believe they think they make good pets. I think they believe they're COOL pets. Because their jaws lock when they bite and their extremely strong. A lot of states outlaw owning purebreed pitbulls because they ARE unpredictable and aggressive. If someone outlaws something people want it more because they think they shouldn't have it.
