Learning what God originally intended for mankind helps us better understand the purpose of life. He said, ‘Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness.’” (Genesis 1:26) So, humans were made with the potential for being like God, possessing the outstanding qualities he has, including wisdom, power, righteousness, and love.
Humans were given oversight of all other life on earth—“the fish of the sea and the flying creatures of the heavens . . . and every moving animal that is moving upon the earth.” (Genesis 1:26) Humans were also commanded to ‘subdue the earth.’ (Genesis 1:28). God set the pattern for subduing the earth when he “planted a garden in Eden, toward the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed.” (Genesis 2:8) This garden of Eden was the model showing what the earth would become. It reflected God’s purpose for our planet.
God also wanted humans to have children and populate the earth. (Genesis 1:28). As we study the Bible, it’s evident that God intended for Adam’s family to grow and for him and his children to extend the boundaries of the garden of Eden until humans filled the entire earth. And the subdued earth would be a paradise. Man would use the riches of the earth for his own benefit, but this would be done in a responsible way. Man was to be a steward of the earth, not a despoiler of it.
The early Bible record also shows that it was not God’s purpose for people to die. Our first parents died only because they disobeyed God. (Genesis 2:16, 17) When they disobeyed, they were no longer fulfilling the purpose of life—they were no longer doing God’s will. So not only did they die but all their offspring have also been subjected to death because of inheriting imperfection from them. (Romans 5:12) Humans were, however, originally intended to live forever, not to die. This is likely why many find it frustrating to contemplate the cutting short of their life’s work by death.
God’s original purpose for humankind and this earth has not changed. He still intends to have a paradise earth peopled by a perfect human race. Yet, he has had to make arrangements to overcome the sad effects of the failure of our first parents. The Bible provides a description of the progressive fulfillment of his purpose.

You got a lot of very different and interesting answers. I think I liked the short ones the best. After all...it really IS simple. The "purpose of life" is to "give life purpose" If you approach life like that, you stand a good chance of actually being happy. And of making a lot of other people happier too.

The purpose of life is know and worship God. How do we get to know God? We were created with dual nature, spiritual (image and likeness of God) and animal (physical). By developing and growing our spiritual nature; in other words, acquire virtues (love, wisdom, mercy, etc) in our life (personal or business or otherwise) we can reflect the images and likeness of God.
In the Bahá'à view, the purpose of life for individuals -- both male and female -- is to develop the powers and capacities latent within them, so that they may contribute their share to and ever-advancing civilization.
Bahá'Ãs believe that human beings are inherently noble, and that the purpose of life is to cultivate such attributes, skills, virtues and qualities as will enable them to contribute their share to the building of an ever-advancing civilization. True education releases capacities, develops analytical abilities, confidence, will, and goal-setting competencies, and instills the vision that will enable them to become self-motivating change agents, serving the best interests of the community. Individuals should be skilled in the art of consultative decision-making and empowered with a sense of their own dignity and worth. They should understand their positions as members of both a local community and the world community, and they must believe their lives can make a difference.

I've been asked this question many times. The answer is so simple. If I was to tell you, you would just say, "Damn, that is so simple, why didn't I think of that." Well, I'm just going to say this: you will discover the answer in two weeks following your conversation with a stranger in a public place.
Count on it.

What is the purpose of human life?
We all have one lifetime to do anything we want. To know what we want in life is to know what needs are there, and we fill up those needs. In the end, we all want to be happy and contented with life.
For example, I feel hungry. There is a need for food and I now have a purpose which is to feed that hunger. That's why human work to get money and feed themselves and their family.
I feel sad. There is a need for happiness and I make it my aim to cheer myself up.
Slowly from focusing on ourselves, we focus on others, for example my friend is feeling down, I cheer him/her up.
Then slowly, my neighbour, my classmate, my colleague and then slowly the lady on the bus, the man on the street... and then slowly the world and humankind.
Humankind needs help, I give what I can, I help in whatever ways I can.
We may not truly know what we really should do, but with what we have, we do our best to make this one life we have meaningful (purposeful).
The purpose to live is determined by yourself - "I make the choice to live the life I choose". Sometimes, we choose to live wrongly and we make mistakes. But it's okay. We fall and we wake up again. But don't be afraid to choose and live life. We are given that Freedom. You know, the feeling of being free. How many of us is truly free? Most of the time, our parents dictate what we are to become, our environment shapes the way we think and behave. But it is never too late to choose now.
But we do not have to make mistakes to learn from it, we can learn from other people's mistakes.
From my point of view, there are many "great" lives out there to choose from. The common that all these "great" lives have is love. Here are a few choices:
(1) Mother Theresa
(2) The President
(3) Normal Tom, Dick and Harry who works and keep working until they die, but do simple loving action in their everyday life. Somehow, they live by this motto "I cannot do great things, but I can do simple things with great love"
You will know what I mean when you found somebody you love. It could be your parents, or siblings, or girlfriend/boyfriend, your husband/wife. If you are Christian, it will be God.
It's like having a girlfriend and you really love her. When she is down, you really want her to be happy and you are willing to do anything to put that smile on her face. Suddenly, life seems so meaningful because it makes you happy. Something like that... and it's only a girlfriend. Imagine "loving" God and everyone like that. Life will be extremely meaningful.
If you are a Christian, we are all called to follow the footsteps of Christ. I can see why Christ's life is meaningful, it's because He loves God His Father and He also loves everyone of us.
Well, we can be that great if we want to. All we have to do is just love everybody. Really love like Christ love. His love was until to the point of willing to sacrifice His life for us. That's how much He loves us.
If you are not Christian, you can learn from these and make your own choice of living.
Happy living my friend.

the purpose of human life in any way you look at it ...religious or by nature is to reproduce ....the sad thing about it is that some humans take this saying tooooooooooooooooo serious and they reproduce like there was no tomorrow --in the process they are making it harder for the rest of us ...by over populating this planet...i bet you that................ that is going to be our worse problem in the future .......over population..............
