Check for no soft spots, and press on the ends, if they are a little softer than the rest of the melon then its ripe.

A slight rap shoud produce a hollow sound. Also, the stem area should be firm. If it is soft, the melon is probably old.

If you are picking a Honeydew -- look for light brown spotting on the outside (not bruises)- they are usually sugar deposits.
If you are picking cantulopes-- they should feel heavy and sometimes smell sweet.

Look for the ones that feel somewhat soft. That shows that they have ripened a bit and will more likely taste better. If they are harder, they're not ripe enough, and if they are too soft, they're overripe. That's about all there is to it.

U knock on it, and if it sounds more hollow than the ones around it, then that's the one you want.

Smell it. Seriously, smell the ends of it, if it is fragrant it is ripe.
