Many people thought so after we won the revolution. It's part of the reason for the second amendment. Because of the way the British Army was used in the colonies, there was great distrust of a standing army controlled by the central government.

If you read history, this country was founded not on ideals, but on war. Our very existence has been saved, not by speakers and beliefs, but war.
George Washington suggested we stay out of the affairs of others, and when we did, we got attacked...Lustania in WWI, Pearl Harbor WWII, WTC 9/11, the Alamo, War of 1812 (they burned the White House to the ground). We have not provoked a war, we have just finished them. North Korea, Iran, Syria...did you hear that????

If there was no standing military, then we would be open to invasion and takeover from any country. Oh, wait a minute, that's already happening - via Illegal Immigration from Mexico!
So I guess there is no real need. I'll submit my resignation to the Navy tomorrow.

NO. A standing army was placed in our constitution to insure the Continental (and current) United States is protected from all possible enemy's. Not to have some form of Army would have been a disaster. If you speak English, and you have the right to free speech and religion thank a veteran. Its because of them defending those rights that you have them. This includes placing notices on this forum... Thanks for your question..

No. Although the idea of a citizen soldier is inherent in the American experiment a standing Army has ben present since we were a country.
