It all depends how much protein you are currently getting in your diet. Protein shakes won't make you instantly strong nor are they are a requirement to be fit / built. If you are struggling to get enough protein in your diet (generally they suggest 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight) then a shake could be the answer.

Protein shakes are a convenient way to get a little extra protein when normal isn't around. I use them first thing in the morning before I train or right before I go to bed. I used to guzzle them quite a bit, but now, I do maybe 1 every day or so. Sometimes I go days without one. At most, I'll have two a day.

I try to eat normal food versus supplementing with expensive shakes. Plain yogurt, egg whites, tuna, etc are all solid substitutes for the protein shake diet and probably cheaper too.
