Sounds like ear mites.
The only way to get rid of such a severe case is by taking him to the vet. The vet will give you ear drops to use on him and maybe some Anti-inflammatory drugs. The Homeopathic treatment to relieve irritation is to put Psorinum or Sulphur on the effected areas. (This only relieves irritation, he still needs veterinary treatment)

Another possibility could be a fungal infection. I have Italian Greyhounds and they are prone to fungal infections on their ears. They start by looking gummy around the edges, then the hair falls off. I always treat as soon as I see any signs, but I have seen some where the owners didn't know what it was, and the dog's ears were totally bald. Once they got an anti-fungal the ears got healthy again and the hair re-grew.

It might be any number of things. If he's an outside cat it could be a flea allergy, or ringworm. Both very treatable. But he does need to be seen by a vet.

My pansy cat had something similar, turned out she was allergic to fleas (didn't think it was possible!) Oh yeah, and she's also allergic to flea colars, so this time of year is ALWAYS fun. Take poor fluffy to the vet though.

Sounds like parasites or a rash. Go to the vet to be sure you don't need medicines.

It could be mites, a vitamin deficiency or it may be allergic to something in the home, or in it's food.
