The pencil wood is cut as two separate pieces with a channel in the middle. They put the lead in the channel and then join the two pieces together.

Sure it's graphite, with lead you cannot write on paper (and actually it is toxic). Graphite is a form of coal and however its structure is tough enough not to become powder at first use, there are layers in it, which can be transferred to the paper (this procedure is what many calls writing).
Graphite is mixed with clay which determines the softness or hardness (in Europe names like: HB, 2B, 4H - H for hard).
From this mixture they make a long thin rod, they burn it out and... then they slice them and put the pieces into the HALVED wood coat. Then the two wood half will simply glued together.

good luck melting graphite (or lead) and not burning the wood.... im not sure but I suppose you could use a machine to cram the lead in, or soak the pencil in water to expand the wood, fit the lead in and let it try and tighten around the lead.

Machinery drives the graphite stick into the wood that has a hole drilled through it.
Then it gets topped off with the eraser.

The pencil is actually two pieces. The graphite is placed in the groove of one piece and then the other piece is joined to it.
