if he would like some dessert. Descartes replies "I think not" and disappears.

No, actually he hadn't eaten yet. He was so hungry, he could have eaten a horse. But the desserts would have been served on a cart. So, as everybody knows, you can't put da cart before the horse. The great thinker was so embarrassed when he realized this, he took a powder.
