I am a dental assistant and honestly, yes it does hurt. Your best bet is to get a general anesthetic, (one that puts you to sleep.) When I had ine removed 3 years ago, I woke up and felt nothing because I was still under the anesthetic. After I woke from my nap however, I was in misery. My best advice is to take your pain medicine on schedule. It's alot easier to control the pain than to have to get rid of it again. Your cheeks will be "puffy" and the pain will last anywhere from 2-4 days. The nerve is not such a big deal. It sounds scary, but is in fact very common. Just avoid getting a dry socket by not smoking or drinking out of a straw and use COLD compresses. Hot will open the blood clod that has been formed after removal. From my experience having teeth removed is alot less hurtful then people believe due to the horror stories by other people. Just keep a positive attitude and don't work yourself up too much. Promise it's better then what you think. Hope this helps!!

I had my wisdom teeth out when I was 17, a "few" years ago. It will be uncomfortable for a little while after wards, but compared to what you are feeling now, you'll be much happier. Mine were my upper wisdom teeth and impacted near the jaw bone. The relief is amazing after wards. I was scared, though. You'll get a prescription for pain and sleep a lot. You may have some swelling, too. I was under a local anesthetic and woke up a little while after wards. It feels a bit strange as your waking up, but the grogginess actually 'softens' things a bit. Just make sure you have some soft foods to eat - I recommend milkshakes! Good luck to you!

I had it done a few years ago. The procedure is generally painless because you're drugged up (well at least they put me under anesthetics during the procedure). I was fine for a few hours afterwards and the pain medications they prescribed were decent. I think the most painful part was just trying to eat during the first week or swallow anything. My cheeks didn't puff out at all, but I heard it does for some people. I lived off mash potatoes for a week! I had all FOUR of mine pulled out though so it will probably not be that much of a problem for you, good luck!

Don't panic. It will hurt for a few days, then you will look back on it and think that is wasn't that bad at all. Those damb teeth are the worst, but you will be so happy when they are gone. GOOD LUCK AND TAKE IT EASY. I had to have my wisdom teeth taken out because they would come out then go back into the skin, then out, and in. It hurt like a s o b , get them out and no more pain.

your dentist or oral surgeon knows what they are doing and will take those teeth out in the best way to minimize discomfort for you, sometimes, afterwards- NOT DURING- you can have some tenderness and even be sore. just make sure you take good care of yourself- get your nutrients by drinking slimfast or something like that and eat all the soft creamy foods you want ...after a day or two- you can rinse with warm salt water to sooth the areas. remember NOTHING thru a STRAW and no spitting or rinsing the first 24 hours

i have heard this is common in western world, to remove wisdom teeth.there is no reason whatsoever to remove your wisdom teeth other than making the dentist rich. that is unless they are really in a bad condition with cavities etc i have not removed any wisdom tooth and i am completely OK. and a bit wiser i guess.

Actually, I just got all four of mine removed last week. It wasn't that bad. You have to drink smoothies and eat scrambled eggs and ice cream for about 4-5 days though. Actually, you can eat anything that doesn't require chewing. With advil, the pain is hardly noticeable, but your cheeks will get VERY puffy.

It does not hurt at all. They will use enough Novacaine to completely deaden your jaw. If you feel any pain at all, tell them and they'll give you another shot.
They will give you a few pain killing pills for after the anesthetic wears off. You might feel some discomfort with them, but if it's actually painful, tell them and they will get you another prescription. The pain pills will make you sleepy, maybe very sleepy.

Doesn't hurt more than a sore tooth. In fact, I didn't feel any pain at all, and they extracted my 2 lower and one upper. Just be sure that the dental surgeon who is going to perform the extraction is one with lots of experience and follow his advice. And don't take acetaminophen cuz it slows healing.
