my hubby is currently going thru basic training and he hasn't told me anything regarding envelopes or mail being open when he received them... but his mom's co worker said that all his mail was open when he received them. does it depend on the batallion commander?

Hi mail won't be opened by the DIs. All packages will have to be opened in front of the DI though. There are several items that he's not allowed to have. The DI will go through a package with him and confiscate anything that's not allowed. Your husband won't get those items back. In fact, most of those items are kept by DIs or donated to the local thrift store. Any pictures that are sent will be reviewed by DIs also, but they won't open them. They're just making sure there's no porno (which is a no no)

nope, not letters but care packages are opened by the private in full view of the Drills and other recruits. this is done to ensure that no contraband has been mailed to the soldiers. So, if you really want to have fun send him a teddy bear or something. I was in basic training during easter and a guy's family sent him a chocolate easter bunny, It was too funny everyone got to eat some of the candy and the drill SGT ended up eating his bunny.

I went through basic back in 1986, and no the DI's do not read their mail. Unless it is a package, then the soldier opens it in front of the DI to ensure nothing is in it that is not allowed.

They can't open his letters. If you send him a package, which I don't suggest, he'l have to open it in front of the DI. It is a federal offense to open someone else's mail. This includes at basic training. They can make you open it in front of them, but cannot open it themselves. They also cannot not give it to you; that would constitute intercepting the mail. DIs are still subject to federal laws. If your husband gets any opened letters, he needs to report it.

When my hubby went in. He never said they did. But they do check to see what you have been sent. Make sure you letters are in a white envelop. With just your address, his address, and a stamp. Don't write anything else on them. That is what I was warned about.

no they do not open your mail. i got lots of pictures in the mail. they didnt open them either. in basic packages had to be opened in front of dis. if there was food in them you had to share until it was gone as food is not allowed in the barracks. because of cockroaches supposedly. packages were also checked for drugs alcohol weapons etc.

Not suppose too. It is against the law, even though some Drill Sergeants might think they are above the law.

My T.I. never read my mail, but he did look at all the pictures people sent me and the other guys in my flight.

They are supposed to look at them to make sure they are not pornographic. Other than that I dont think they can read your mail.

It is illegal for anyone to open your mail. Unless you're in jail or prison.
