Actually they are working on a cavity vaccine as most cavities are caused by bacteria. It is a vaccine that is applied by spraying it on your teeth with an aerosol

There is a 'new' additive that helps reduce bacteria. It is called Xylitol and the people in Sweden have been using it for a long time and have a much lower incidence of decay. It is a natural sweetener that's molecular form differs from regular sugar, so the bacteria can not 'digest' it. It also helps to reduce the bacteria that sticks to the teeth in the form of plaque. Doctors are now recommending that pregnant women and new moms chew gum with Xylitol so they wont pass on the bacteria that causes cavities to their babies.

Thing is that people wont always do what is best for them, like brush and floss and learn how to better their chances against having toothaches and cavities, so I am sure they will be around for a long time to come. Same reason people smoke, um hello only negatives to that, but people still do it.

Luckily until the time that we actually have a vaccine against cavities, dentistry will keep evolving and bettering their technology to help people be more comfortable. A new technology is laser dentistry that states the patient doesn't even have to get numb in most circumstances. In hygiene, we have a new numbing agent that numbs the tissue but doesn't need to be injected with a needle, so it makes treating gum disease a bit more comfortable for those that are unfortunate enough to have THAT problem.

even with the best technology- people still break bones and get cut or in wrecks etc.

we are experiencing less decay in our young people until they discover cola's and other sugary drinks/foods because of fluoride.

but yes, we still get cavities and people wait sometimes until the cavity gets to the nerve and boy, that does hurt. other things happen tho that are beyond our control such as falling and breaking teeth ect.

the greatest thing about where we are in dentistry today is that we have anesthetic- fast acting and dissipates quickly, we have nitrous oxide for the very nervous or those who just want to chill out while in the dental chair and oral sedation for long long procedures or the extreme phobic.

and most wonderful of all is the fact that our dental materials are so long lasting as long as the patient takes care of the rest of his/her teeth- they seem to not need replacing due to material failure but if they need replacing it is more likely due to patient recurrent decay

Cavities can be fixed, you know? And there is medication for the pain.

Acidic bodies make us susceptible to tooth decay, which leads to painful cavities.

Stay away from sticky sweets, ingesting too much sugar and products that make us acidic (soda, coffee, etc.) and take calcium (coral calcium works well) to get your pH up.

because you haven't been making use of the technology properly, viz:
Floss, sugarfree gum, sugarfree soft drinks and sweeteners, low sugar foods that still taste good, antibacterial mouthwashes, fortified and additive-rich toothpastes, high tech and even electric ultrasound toothbrushes... etc

The technology and methods exist to prevent these things, but people still have to use them, and use them correctly.

Well, you could have them all removed and get modern false teeth. Man can reproduce the teeth God gave us. We just have to take good care of them.
