It all depends on what it is. Things that are highly mechanical and prone to failures that are both hard to detect and repair, I would avoid them.
Digital cameras, expensive portable electronics, optical devices belongs to this category.
Having said that, I just purchased two business grade PC from Dell refurbished. They were identical to new, packaged in new box with all accessories, documentation, and warranty, yet at half price. I'm extremely pleased. I wouldn't hesitate doing it again.
To me, I have to be confident that the item is in good quality, have manufacturers stand behind it, and at enough of price reduction that whatever the risk I'd be taking is worth it.

RE:
Is buying factory refurbished electronics worth it?
I've always been kind of hesitant about refurbished stuff. Have refurbished equipment worked out for you, or should one just stick to buying brand new stuff?

Usually refurbished electronics come with a 90 day warranty, I would recommend you purchase an extended coverage warranty. for about $50.00 you get coverage for 2 years and if you have a good credit card you automatically get one year warranty on ALL electronics (read your documentation on your credit card). I have a refurbished Nikon and haven't had any problems.
Good luck

ask to see the qualified check that has been done by a proper electrician in the field the device requires. and always ask for a warranty because this insures that if nething happens u can take it back, if they dont give u a warranty the chances are that maybe the stuff hasnt been checked and it could be badly fixed so be careful wat u buy and how u go about it and dont be scared to ask for proof.

better buy new, then buy used and abused and fixed and abused again.
its shorter to say and probably a better investment,*
*Note:
The exception to this rule is Type of Item and Price.
Meaning a refurbished Plasma 52' tv for say like 1200
when it was 2500, uh hmm, up to you.
