I'm a retired Navy Chief Petty Officer so believe me when I say this is an extremely important question for you to have answered. The best person to answer this is a Navy recruiter. Rates and Ratings change so frequently anymore that only recruiters who have the active regs in front of them should be answering questions like this. PLEASE do yourself and the Navy a favor and talk to a recruiter.

As a Navy veteran myself. I would say join the sea-bees. You also get good training on a variety of equipment. Also if he doesn't mind being on a ship machinist mate is a good job. There is allot of opportunity in civilian world for people of either rate (job).

Find something you like that matches a civilian occupation. Check into wheither or not it will require more traing once you're dischaged. Electrician, welder, computers or a corpsman are good examples.
