It will be difficult for YOU, because you are asking, on an open forum, if it will be difficult to associate with his black family. You are a prima donna of prejudice. Travel, discover, and get an education. Good luck !

Alot easier said than done, for sure. But if this guy is worth it, none of that should matter. Speaking from personal experience, I moved 1600 miles to be with an african guy whose entire family lived in LA (I was from a farm in IOWA). Talk about culture shock!! I was really afraid at first because I wasn't sure how or what to say. I mean, meeting a guy's family for the first time is hard enough without this added pressure of different cultures. As it turned out, they welcomed me with open arms and took me in almost as if I were immediate family to them. I am no longer with this guy, however; we still do communicate and his family still likes me and would help me out if I ever needed anything. As you think about this to make your decision, just remember that we are all afraid of the unknown- that's natural. Now, if they don't make you feel welcome, well, that's another story. Hope all goes well!!

From the sounds of it, you are not African? It's okay, I've been there, it's not as hard as you think. You just need to be open to sitting down and talking to them, if you are from a different cultural background, try learning about his cultural background first. In antho we call this being culturally relativistic. When you to do this it makes the situation a lot more comfortable, and easier, but make sure you only do what you are comfortable with, both sides have to give some. :) I had to do this when I went to Colombia with my ex. (still great friends) Try putting Colombian and British culture together, that one is funny. :) You can do it, and he'll be glad you tried. Have fun.

It isn't hard to do so. If you see yourself with your boyfriend in the near future together, so might as well start now. If you love your boyfriend, you would find the courage to do so.
I have one question for you, why does ethnicity (african) matter to you? You should rephrase your question to "My boyfriend wants me to associate myself with his family, is it really hard to do?".

With any family no matter what race it could be hard to get along with mates family. Just be yourself and show them that you really care for your bf and show great interest in them. Ask questions, but make sure that they are not offensive.
