How hard can it be - you're just following a bunch of directions.
I don't actually cook myself only because I don't have the patience for something to boil or to bake.

some people don't understand the metric system and some people don't like sticking to a recipe. they like to do their own thing. and some people don't like to or don't want to cook so they do a bad job. honestly. if you don't like to do something, do you put forth your best effort?

I don't agree with the people that say "because they can't follow directions". That's part of it, but there's more than just that.
To be a really good cook, once they get the basics down, the person needs to have a good sense of smell and taste and a willingness to experiment. I'm constantly creating new dishes, and when I do, I decide what to add based on what spice smells good at the time. I decide what spices seem to go together, based on smell and taste, and add those to the dish.
I've had a few things that weren't great, but the dishes are always edible. Most of the things, however, turn out very well.

Because they do not read the directions. Most good cookbooks for beginners explain all the terminologies and useful hints for beginners. Start with the simple things and work your way up. Many good recipes are simple and easy and healthy and fun to prepare. Have fun and experiment with friends.
