To answer this question, you need to know when Earth is Earth and when it established itself as our planet. First you need to know, if Earth came from the Big Bang or not, if so then when Earth started turning or revolving. Once you establish this, the answer is very simple with a little math.

12 Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.

13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.

14 And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.

If you view these biblical passages from a scientific point of view, the earth would have to stop turning in order for the sun to remain motionless for an extra day. There is also mention of the moon ceasing motion also. There is an ancient Andean legend that says that darkness remained for 20 hours and the moon would not set. The people sent up their prayers for the sun to rise and it did rise. Could this be the same event recorded on different sides of the world?

I think that if it did, life on earth would end. People don't realize how fragile the earth is. The climate is so sensitive to getting the exact amount of sunlight. If the earth stopped for even a second, that would be a second more of sunlight that the one spot is used to getting, which could throw life off.

Well, that would explain the Biblical flood.....if the Earth stopped turning, the inertia of the water would keep it moving. But other than Divine intervention, I don't see what else could cause the Earth to stop moving.

The day Elvis died, the earth stopped turning for 1 minute, out of respect.

I don't think so. This would have jeopardized life on earth, the moon orbit and Earth's orbit too much. Scientists would certainly find obvious clues.

By the way, why is this question in the "medicine" category?

The Earth doesn't ever stop rotating and it never has since the time it has been in orbit around the Sun.

The Earth only stopped turning once, and that's when they had to restart the Sun.

If it did-- how would it have started up again? It only moves by momentum.

Uhm-- Nicole dear-- we would not have lost gravity. All masses attract each other through gravity. They don't have to be spinning to attract each other. Please don't spread scientific misinformation.

if it stopped turing we would have lost all gravity. Making even oceans rise.... I'm pretty sure it never has or will happen.
