Istanbul has to be one of the most fantastic cities for westerners to visit. It is an ancient city and the crossroads between Europe and Asia, complete with amazing scenes like the "Blue Mosque," the Grand Bazaar, and the Palace on the Bosphorus. You can hear the sounds of the late afternoon reading of the Koran pronounced vehemently through loudspeakers on the minarets, while shopkeepers hock a dazzling array of spices, sweets, or carpets nearby. You can relax in the "hammam" baths or in a local coffee bar with a water pipe filled with apple-flavored tobacco. Best of all, you can enjoy the people of Istanbul, who tend to be warm and friendly, and who genuinely want to help you out, even if it is to get you the best deal on a finely woven carpet!

Τürkiye? Ah, you mean Turkey.
OK, Istanbul is probably one of the best cities in the world IF we are talking about natural beauty, historical places and of course delicious food.
There you can find some genuine, ready to help, people.
But if we are talking about the once lively and now almost extinct cultural diversity in the society( for example, there are a couple of hundred persons of greek-orthodox(...Byzantine) origin compared to many many thousands present once say before 1974 or 1964 or 1955), once abundant and now extinct cosmopolitan nature, the huge poor population transfer from Anatolia, the widespread chaos you experience there...then a melancholy is unavoidable.

Sooooo much fun, a great city with great people! I had a blast and can't wait until I can go again. Next time I'll bring more money so I can buy the great stuff that's for sale in the Grand Bazaar. I also loved Taksim Square and the spice bazaar...if you can get the chance to stop in this great city, don't pass it up!

The Beyoglu neighborhood is the best--not as touristy as Sultanahmet. Definitely check it out. Good cafes and shops.
